The Thin Red Line (1998 movie)

There are only 2 gods of existential cinema, and their names are Terrence Malick.

My ratings

  • Acting: 10
  • Dialogue: 9
  • Score(music): 7
  • Cinematography: 10
  • Repeatable/Rewatchable: Yes!
Notable Quote: "Does the earth profit from our ruin?"
In many ways, The Thin Red Line was a prequel to Malick's 2011 masterpiece, The Tree of Life. The Thin Red Line is a film about the invasion of an island on the Pacific by American forces during WW2. The army meets harsh resistance by Japanese soldiers, and amidst all the violence and gore, Terrence Malick finds a way to make the movie a sombre meditation on the nature of good and evil.
An all-star cast supports this movie. Jim Cavaziel, Adrien Brody, Woody Harrelson, John Cusack, Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Elias Koteas, Ben Chaplin and even George Clooney makes a cameo.
This film was a lot to take in. Every scene was beautifully framed, and the questions posed by the character monologues can fuel a panel discussion on morality. Hans Zimmer did the score, and it was alright, but not as great as his work on Gladiator or Inception.

Beautiful shots everywhere.
